Antonin Dvořák once claimed that the future of music in America must be "founded upon what are called negro melodies... These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them." It was this idea that brought about his famous New World Symphony in 1893, a work rooted deeply in influeces from African American spirituals and Native American music.
Forty years later, America's future would become its now, with the premiere of Florence Price's Symphony No. 1 in 1933. It was Price's first major orchestral composition and the first symphony written by a Black woman to be performed by a major American orchestra.
Our Spring Concert will bring Price's vision to life, along with the sounds of two other aspects of America.
Act One: The Old West, featuring the music from the classic Westerns of Ennio Morricone: Man With A Harmonica, and The Ecstasy of Gold
Act Two: The Big City, featuring George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue
